TACOMA - Three Rangers hit the NWAC qualifying marks in their event this weekend at the Ed Boitano Invitational hosted by the University of Puget Sound. These marks qualify them to compete at the NWAC Championships hosted by Mt. Hood Community College on May 18-19.
The meet started on Friday with the hammer throw. On her very first throw, sophomore Lily Campbell (North Mason HS / Belfair, WA) qualified for NWAC's with a throw of 37.08m, just past the NWAC qualifying mark of 36.82m (120' 9"). She got a little better with every subsequent throw, finally hitting 40.43m (132'8") on her last throw. Campbell finished 4th in last year's NWAC Champs with a throw of 38.56m (126'6").
Sophomore Joe Kirk-Woodbury (West Seattle HS / Seattle, WA) also qualified for the NWAC Champs in the hammer with a throw of 46.10m, placing 4th overall. The NWAC qualifying mark is 42.21m (138' 6"). Kirk-Woodbury is the defending NWAC Champion, throwing 47.97m in last year's final.
In his very first collegiate meet, freshman Hesser Sotelo (Meridian HS / Bellingham, WA) finished 4th with a throw of 53.36m (175'1") in the javelin, just past the NWAC qualifying mark of 53.01m (173' 11").
The teams travel back to Tacoma on March 14 to compete in the PLU open, hosted by Pacific Lutheran University.
